9-Element NPS-IS Plan Preparation for Aukerman Creek Watershed
Written by: BJ Price
The Preble Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is please to announce that we have received a grant to prepare a 9-Element Nonpoint Source Implementation Strategy (NPS-IS) plan for the Aukerman Creek watershed in Preble County. Aukerman Creek empties into Twin Creek northeast of Gratis and drains an area extending northwest from Gratis to the vicinity of Yost Road and St Rt 122, and extending southwest from Gratis as far as Platt Road. This highly competitive grant, funded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is one-of-a-kind exclusively for the watersheds in the Ohio River basin.
The purpose of the 9-Element NPS-IS Plan is to improve water quality by identifying and evaluating sources of impairment such as: agricultural runoff, stream channel modification, sedimentation, and excessive nutrients; and determine what water quality goals, restoration methods, and conservation practices are needed. The 9-Element Plan will identify and prioritize the watershed critical areas and describe restoration and management measures to address those areas. To ensure the success of the plan, the Ohio EPA encourages cooperation with local community members who can help to develop and implement the watershed restoration and protection strategies.
Preble SWCD will partner with Environmental Solutions AQ, a local environmental consultant, in drafting the plan. The project timeframe will be from November 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. Interested parties are also encouraged to visit this website for additional information about the program and details of a 9-Element plan. You can contact Preble SWCD at (937) 456-5159 for more information.
